The AR (Augmented Reality) is able to incorporate our reality, the space in which we move everyday, with multimedia contents. It allows us to expand barriers, break limits such as the one of having a single and never changing visual support. As if this was not enough yet, the last residual boundary between digital and real has been knocked down by the advent of holograms. Transforming light into substance, this is what holograms are all about. Using a laser, in fact, it’s possible to bend waves of light as we please; the only limit is our fantasy. Holography is also unique for another reason: it’s almost impossible to counterfeit. Right now, in your wallet, there is at least one hologram: bills and identity documents are full of them!
HOLOGRAMS: THE BEGINNINGS OF THIS NEW MARKET
The first to have shook the world of developers’ platforms have been Microsoft and NASA with their HoloLens. Modelling light is, with these lenses, a sci-fi game comparable to an American colossal. Motion sensors, microphones and depth cameras improve the experience’s minimal details. They are the more technical and entrepreneurial version of the Kinect technology fo Xbox that we are used to see. Architects, engineers and surgeons use them to touch with their very hand what they’ve always been able to only study on books. Mechanical and anatomical models are now within reach. Among the options there is also a simulation of Mars’ environment to be literally teleported onto another planet! On Microsoft’s cue, Sony has made its own entrance in this new market. Its team of technicians has brought to life an interactive factory made up of projects and innovations regarding holograms, the Wow Studio. The “WOW!” factor is certainly there.
AUGMENTED REALITY AND HOLOGRAMS: WE START FROM SMARTEYEGLASS
We can start from the basic SmartEyeglass which concentrate our smartphones in a designer pair of glasses and we then land to great novelties. Common surfaces become house models or musical instruments. If your hobby is hockey, for instance, it will be sufficient to lightly brush your kitchen counter, it’ll transform in a professional field.

WHO INVESTS MORE IN HOLOGRAPHY’S DEVELOPMENTS?
The answer will not come as a surprise for any of you: China. The objective of the emergent Asian market is realizing a concept of a more dynamic office. Several startups were founded, and still are, with this goal in mind. Interactive work-stations and real objects blending with virtual ones are, according to Chinese and Americans, part of our future. Meta, one of these start-ups, with its headquarters in San Francisco, has tried to apply the idea to its employees’ work. The outcome, even if it didn’t live up to expectations, has brought about the development of a data-visualizing app and a 3D post-it one. This feels like the beginning of the revolution.
HOLOGRAMS: WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
According to sceptics, we are witnessing the end of human contact, of genuine experiences. What they are not considering, though, is that the scope is bringing interactions to their maximum, not crushing them. For Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, AR’s past impact on gaming experiences (a big example is Pokèmon Go!) is an indication of how much the world wants it. In these days, the company based in Cupertino is exploring the opportunities for modifications to its hardwares and softwares. Even with the mystery covering the entirety of Apple’s projects, rumors say they are working on a new teleconference platform. What if they’re also considering incorporating holograms in their famous smartphones? We can only wait and see. Augmented Reality is the best tool for interacting and sharing we could desire, outside physical limits of dimension and distance. Unreachable experiences will soon be an option for the common person, for everybody, in a tangible way. It’s up to us what use we will do of it and if it will positively impact our lives.
